World Remembrance Day for Children - AfterLight

For Worldwide Candle Lighting 2025, commissioned by the City of Ghent, we designed a light installation that supports grief and remembrance in a gentle, shared way.
During the remembrance walk, each participant receives a folded lantern with a dimmed light. The light responds to proximity: when people come closer to one another, it subtly begins to glow brighter.
The lanterns are made using Miura origami, a manual folding technique where simple movements create a three-dimensional form.
At the end of the walk, the individual lights are brought together in a field, alongside the illuminated ‘parent totems’. The parent figure is deliberately left open to interpretation: as a symbol of care, connection, and memory.
A quiet place where light is allowed to speak softly and where grief literally becomes a little lighter by being together.
